Site visit at Oberer Letten

Short-term actions planned:

  • Renew court lines
  • Re-tension and replace nets
  • Add padding to net posts
  • Replace court borders with wood

Medium-term topics discussed:

  • Net posts to be replaced
  • Sand replacement to be assessed
  • Excavation and relocation of larger sand volumes only in coordination with the city

After weeks and months of ongoing exchanges with local authorities in Zürich, we had the opportunity last Wednesday to conduct an on-site visit. Alongside Letten community local Marco, we met the representatives from Grün Stadt Zürich and the Sports Office at the courts. (One member of the Grün Stadt Zürich team was unfortunately unable to stay for the final photo.)

While Grün Stadt Zürich is responsible for the maintenance of the ground and soil of outdoor facilities, the responsibility for the net installations themselves lies with the city’s Sports Office. Even though the visit was focused on the courts at Oberer Letten, we had the chance to raise general wishes and explain issues such as injury risk from court borders or defective net installations using concrete on-site examples.

It was overall very gratifying to be heard by a four-person delegation with a wide range of competencies and expertise. The next steps were divided into short-term and medium-term measures as outlined above.

In addition, the revision of the court borders should not only address injury risk but also prevent sand from escaping — particularly towards the sloping green area between the court and the path on the Limmat side of the fields. We’re pleased about this hands-on start and look forward to continued collaboration with everyone involved from the community and the city. We’ll keep you posted!
