Which courts are worth visiting? Our recommendations:

WhatsApp Groups

There are a few “public” WhatsApp group chats for arranging games. Since we’d prefer not to share the links to individual communities publicly, we ask you to drop us a short message at hoi [ @ ] morebeachvolley and we’ll send you the relevant links and join instructions.

Oberer Letten

The most well-known and busiest courts in Zurich are the ones at Oberer Letten. In summer there’s always something going on. Our tips:

  • Actively approach people and ask to join a game
  • Warm up with others — it helps everyone gauge the level
  • The Letten is a great starting point for building beach volleyball connections

The two public courts sit right on the Limmat river and are played on from early morning until evening in good weather. There are no floodlights, but plenty of die-hards who play until you truly can’t see the ball anymore. During the height of summer, wait times can get a bit long. On the upside, the community is very inclusive — even if you show up alone, you’ll find people to play with quickly. A little beach experience helps, especially during peak hours, but either way the Letten is a great starting point.

Sometimes the mood can get a little tense due to long wait times. Please don’t take it personally and don’t let the odd negative experience put you off.

Badi Allenmoos

Also very popular is Badi Allenmoos with its 4 beach courts. At Allenmoos many groups already arrive as a ready-made four. Finding someone to play with on your own can be a bit trickier here, though not impossible. The same rule applies: actively approach others and strike up a conversation. Many people know what it’s like to be new and are happy to help. Going it alone is harder here than at the Letten — but the vibe at Allenmoos is relaxed.

Located not far from Bucheggplatz, Allenmoos is easy to reach by public transport. Outside of the swimming season entry is free; otherwise the usual pool admission prices and the City of Zurich sports pass apply. The beach courts at the Badi can be reserved by phone for a fee, which also makes training sessions possible. But even if you haven’t reserved, you’re better off arranging to meet after 17:00 — at least with a partner, and ideally with an opponent of matching skill level. At Badi Allenmoos games are pre-arranged rather than winner-stays-on — there’s no king-of-the-court format. After-work hours usually mean one game and then you wait again, which makes finding a well-matched opponent all the more important. Unfortunately the Badi closes early, around 20:30, even in the middle of summer, and the beach courts close with it.

Other reasonably playable courts such as Sihlhölzli or the court on Neunbrunnenstrasse can be reserved online via gotcourts. You can find more beach courts using our Courtfinder.
